41Write about belonging

Write about a moment when you felt that you belonged. As you do your daily writing, think about a call with someone dear to you. Write what brings the two of you together, and how you belong to them.

Write about meeting a group of people at a sports activity, or a group of friends, or even a team at work that certain ties hold together. Write it from things that happened during the day. Write about your relationships with your neighbours, if you have any, or about anything that makes you see yourself as part of one group with these people. Write how you are loved and how you matter in other people’s lives, when they ask about you because you are ill, or missing from work, or missing from some gathering, or when somebody checks on you in general. On a day when you find nothing of this kind that came your way, write again about a moment like it from a while ago.

From the other side, write about the times you asked after someone you missed, how you wrote a message to a friend that day because you had not called them. Write about that bond which messages and calls keep alive online, and how you feel that you belong to this group or that one. Write about photos you saw that show you with a group of people you feel you belong to. Write about everything lovely that happened while you were in touch with people: the funny things, the conversations and the rest.

And it does not have to be something you did for people you know, or something they did for you. Write about something you did together with people you do not know. Write about passing moments of cooperation with people.

And if you thought for a moment that you belong to your neighbours, to your area, to your family, to one of your groups of friends, or even to all of humanity, and that thought gave you a good feeling, write about it. Remember that the basis of optimistic writing is writing about what you felt.
