Write about people as characters in a film you love.

Each day, notice the people around you and let yourself assume something comfortable about them — that their intentions are kind, that they mean you well, that they are more or less as you hope they are. You get to be right about them. This isn’t a claim about hidden facts; it is a way of seeing, the lens you choose to point at the people who move through your day.

Describe them creatively, as if they were characters in a film you love watching. Give them a warmth, a small charm, a motive you can live with. The method asks you not to write about others except through their interaction with you — and this is the sanctioned way to do it: not as verdicts on who they truly are, but as the affectionate, imaginative portrait you would paint of a character you are fond of.

Do this every day, and the people around you slowly become a cast you enjoy rather than a source of suspicion or worry.
