Write, for example, about how you liked what you were wearing, which was very different in its colours and its style. Or about what you find distinctive in your accent, or the words you use, or your looks, or the way you grew up. But these have to be things that are positives in your own eyes. Try to look for some of those differences that you feel good about. Write also about standing apart in certain situations, when your position on some issue was the more ethical one, only if you really felt that, of course, and valued the difference in you. And if you also felt the worth of something you have that other people do not have, something that is uniquely yours alone, whether qualities of character, or relationships, or things, and you had thought about that, write it too.
42Write about what makes you distinct and unique
Write about moments from your day, or from the recent past, in which you looked different from other people in a beautiful and positive way (if you really felt that).
For instance
- I wore the mustard coat today, the one nobody else in my office would wear. I liked seeing it in the lift mirror. It is loud and it is mine, and I felt good in it all day.
- Someone at lunch smiled at the way I say certain words, the way my grandmother said them. I used to hide my accent. Today I liked it. It carries the place I grew up in, and nobody else at that table has it.
- In the meeting everyone agreed to blame the delay on the supplier. I said it was partly our mistake, because it was. I was the only one who said it, and I felt proud of that difference on the way home.
